Place Value: Expanded Form through 10,000 (5 digit numbers)

Here we practice writing expanded form using a large 5 digit number, so place values must now be thoroughly understood.  (The higher place values are often not mastered by even older students).
Expanded Form is done by taking one digit at a time in a number (starting with the highest place value) and multiplying each number by its place value.
Therefore, 84,601 would be 80,000 + 4,000 + 600 + 0 + 1. When teaching students, remember that examples in this case are much easier to understand than verbal descriptions.

Use the number in the Standard Form box to show how many -
ten thousands, thousands, hundreds and ones.
